The theory test is a crucial part of getting your motorcycle licence, it will also teach you valuable knowledge and road craft that you will use every time you get on your bike. You will need to complete the theory test before getting your motorcycle licence even if you have already completed one for any other licence. The Theory test is split into two sections;

  • A multiple choice section – 50 multiple choice questions to answer in 57 minutes – You will need to get 43 out of the 50 questions right to pass this section.
  • A hazard perception section – a video test about spotting hazards on the road. – You will need to get 44 marks out of a possible 75 to pass this section.

You will book and take both sections as a single test, and you have to pass both  to pass the test.

You can book your theory test online by visiting gov.uk’s page on theory test booking. It will cost you £23 to book your theory test, and you need to be at least 16 in order to complete it.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that if you’ve already been driving on the road and are experienced you won’t need to practice for this test, the highway code is always changing. Before you book your theory test you can complete a mock test free of charge, this will give you an idea of where you’re at and if you need further revision. If you want to try it out then just click the link here and see how you get on, you might be surprised at what you have forgotten! MOCK TEST

REMEMBER: This pass certificate will only last for two years, meaning you will need to pass both modules of the motorcycle practical test in that time, otherwise you’ll have to take the theory test again.

Below is a short video about the theory test if you want to take a quick look.

The course

The first stage is multiple choice, which you’ll take using a touch screen computer with the hazard perception section recording your responses via the computer mouse.

You’ll need to pass both parts and not just one or the other, or you will fail the test and have to take both again.

The questions you have to answer in the multiple choice section are specific to motorcycles, however the hazard perception test is the same for everyone with the pass mark varying according to the category of test.
