The full category A licence is the only license you can obtain that has no power restrictions. Having the full category A license allows you to take pillions, ride on the motorway and of course…ride any bike you want regardless of the size or power! There are two ways to obtain your full category A license;

The Progressive Route

If you have held an A2 licence for at least two years you can upgrade to your full category A licence by passing the two-part practical test, without taking your theory again.

This means you can take the test when you are 21 instead of 24, as with the direct access route.

This test must be carried out on a motorcycle that produces at least 54bhp or 40kw and is over 595cc.

The Direct Access Route (DAS)

If you are aged 24 or over you can go straight for your full category A license, you will need to pass the theory test and the two-part practical test.

This test must be carried out on a motorcycle that produces at least 54bhp or 40kw and is over 595cc

The course

  • Begin off-road on the car park, with a familiarisation and practice session. As soon as you have gained your confidence and control of the bigger bike, you will be back on the road to complete your riding tuition towards your Module One test.
  • We will book a training and practice session for you on the official DSA test site where the actual test is taken.
  • Module Two is a structured lessons or sessions of theory and practical training on-road to ensure you’re completely ready to take your Module Two practical test.

Types of full licence

There are different types of full Licence on offer, to fit what you’re looking to.

The types available are all dependent on your age and the bike you take your test on:

  • AM Licence (50cc)– If you only want to ride a scooter (16yo+)
  • A1 Licence (125cc) – Ideal for younger riders (17yo+)
  • A2 Licence (500cc) – More freedom and choice (19yo+)
  • Full Licence (650cc+) – The only option if you want to ride any bike. (Min 24yo+ or 21yo+ if you’ve held an A2 Licence for 2 years)

Course Requirements

To take your A1 Course you will require:

  • UK Provisional Licence, or
  • UK Full Car Licence, or
  • EU Licence with a Confirmation of Registration Certificate (D91)
  • If you still have an old style paper Licence (without a photo) you must bring a valid passport as proof of ID
  • You must be over 24 years old, or have held an A2 licence for 2 years
  • Your compulsory basic training (CBT) certificate (DL196)

The Ride Academy provides everything you need on the day. Bike hire, clothing (helmet, jacket, gloves, waterproof trousers) & all insurances.

You will need to wear sensible clothing – we suggest jeans and boots / trainers. Strictly no shorts, sandals or flip-flops. When you arrive for your lesson, if your instructor feels that you are not sensibly dressed they could reject you for training.
